Survey

Recently we did a survey to some university students regarding our investigation theme to see what they were thinking in regards to it.

As you can see in figure 1, this question was one for the pollsters to write their own answers, as we skimmed through the results we saw that many people wrote similar things so we grouped them into the three categories presented to the chart.

Figure 1: What is poverty? pie chart.

Just like the first question we let the pollsters write their own answers. Most people think that it is something related to the government (25%) while 34% think that is due to education and unennployment (17% for each option) (Figure 2).

Figure 2: What do you think are the main causes of poverty? pie chart.

Most of our pollsters live in México, from those the majority are from either Puebla or Mexico City (Figure 3).

Figure 3. Where do you live? pie chart.

All our pollsters agreed to have poverty in their countries (Figure 4).

Figure 4. Is there poverty in your country?

With this chart we wanted to get an idea of how conscious where they about poverty in their country (Figure 5).

Figure 5. What is the porcentage approximatly of poverty in your country (according to what they think) pie chart.

Only one person thought that there is no relation between them (Figure 6).

Figure 6. Do you believe that there is a relationship between poverty and health?

From the people that answered yes we asked them to please expand on their answer, from what they wrote we synthesized their information since many replies had very similar reasoning, the most popular answer was something related to not having enough money to provide healthcare for themselves (Figure 7).

Figure 7. Table for the people that answered yes on the relation between poverty and health.

We wanted to know who did our pollsters thought were the most affected people. We also let our pollsters write the answer but I think we might have worded it wrong since we know poor people are the most affected, but from from those who are poor, who are the ones that are affected the most, due to our error we got 5 people replying with poor people (Figure 8).

Figure 8. Table demonstrating who pollsters think are the most affected.

We wanted to know how how conscious were our pollsters with the programs to help poor people in their country. We are glad to know that more that half of the pollsters know that there are programs to help those in need but still a lot of people don’t know about them (Figure 9).

Figure 9. Are there programs in your country that support people in need? pie chart.

Only 5% of our pollsters answered that there was no relation between poverty and health (Figure 6) from that 5% we gathered what is shown in Figure 10.

Figure 10. Table for the people that answered no on the relation between poverty and health

Nowadays many people say that “poor people are poor because they want to” so we wanted to know what our pollsters thought about it and let them write their own answers, from those we saw that many were similar ideas just worded a bit differently. The most popular answer was something related to the government and lack of education (Figure 11).

Figure 11. Why do you think people are poor pie chart.

Due to our research question being “what is the relation between poverty and health?” we thought it might be important to know what our pollsters thought what health problem would develop the most between poor people by letting them write their own answers. The vast majority thought that it was something related to malnutrition (Figure 12).

Figure 12. What heatlh problems do you thin poor people develop the most? pie chart.

Most people agreed on the fact that most people become sick because they are poor and become poor because of illnesses, due to all the economic factors it involves. Also, many people mentioned there are external variables that affect peoples lives, like loosing their jobs. Or that there could also be poor people with great health conditions. (fig. 13)

Figure 13. Do you think people get sick because they are poor or because they are sick they become poor? pie chart.

By asking the question “What is another factor that you think might influence health in poor people?” We could see that moat of them think that is due to not having enough food. The answers provided was a synthesis of everything our pollsters typed (Figure 14)

figure 14. What is another fact that you think might influence health in poor people? pie chart.

As our last question we were curious about what our pollsters would do to help fight this crisis, the most popular answer was support programs and donating (Figure 15). But that left us thinking because we already have support programs, and donation programs so what is really wrong?

Thank you!

Hope to see you on our next post.
